How Often Should I Get an Oil Change Service?
We recommend replacing your engine oil and filter every 3,000 miles or 3 months – whichever comes first.
Why Do You Recommend Replacement of Oil at 3,000 Miles?
Having your oil changed on a regular basis is one of the most important things you can do to keep your car in proper running order. Literally speaking, there is no better way to keep your car in tiptop performance and have it run for hundreds of thousands of miles than to get an oil and filter change.
Frequently Asked Questions
Synthetic oil is scientifically formulated to perform better than conventional motor oil. That’s because conventional motor oil is simply a natural mineral oil. Synthetic oil is chemically engineered with additives that help it stay cleaner, longer. It also flows more freely through the engine’s components, which helps reduce friction and causes less wear and tear. Because it doesn’t break down as fast, synthetic oil lasts longer, increasing the time between oil changes. For the eco-conscious, synthetic oil also burns cleaner than conventional motor oil, resulting in fewer emissions.
Many vehicle owners want to stretch the time between oil changes as long as possible thinking they’re saving money. However, waiting too long between oil changes means more stress on your engine. Getting your vehicle’s oil changed every 3,000 miles will help get increased fuel economy, increase engine performance, and ensure longer lifespans for the engine’s components.
Having an oil change every 3,000 miles is recommended when your normal driving habits include:
- Driving in high heat and humidity
- Making short, frequent trips
- Having long idle periods
- Hauling a trailer or other heavy loads
Absolutely. As the oil in your vehicle gets older, it gets dirtier the more it is circulated. The more dirt and debris in the oil, the less able it is to do its job of keeping critical components lubricated. Going beyond the recommended limit for oil changes means increased stress on these components and can ultimately lead to full engine failure. It’s cheaper and faster to stick to a routine maintenance plan including getting your oil changed regularly.
A good rule of thumb is to get your vehicle’s oil changed every 3,000 miles or every 3 months, whichever occurs first. There’s also some signs to watch for including:
- Checking the dipstick: If you spot any flecks or the oil is dark, it’s time to get your oil changed. Also, note the level of oil on the stick and get a change if it’s low.
- Loud noises while driving: If you notice the engine seems louder than usual, it may be time for an oil change.
Also watch for a “check engine” light on your dashboard, which can indicate the need for an oil change.
Definitely. Full synthetic oil has a host of advantages over conventional oil, including lasting longer, being more resistant to breaking down, tolerating higher temps, and extending the life of your vehicle. Synthetic blend motor oil does have synthetic oil in it, but it also contains conventional oil. This allows some of the benefits of a full synthetic oil change while keeping it lower in price by mixing in a conventional oil, as well.
Different vehicles have different oil needs depending on several factors like their age, their environment, and how they are driven. Two of the most common types of oil are 5w30 and 10w30. Your vehicle’s manufacturer will detail the appropriate oil for your specific type of vehicle. Some manufacturers will specify the need for full synthetic oil, especially with high-performance vehicles. Unsure on which oil is best for your vehicle? Our automotive experts will help you find the perfect oil for your vehicle and get you back on the road fast.
Yes, it is absolutely recommended to change the oil filter every time you get an oil change. The filter collects all of the debris and sediment in your old oil and would immediately contaminate the new oil being put in.
If you Google “oil change Houston,” you’ll be hit with a lot of results, especially from dealerships.
Many dealerships, however, charge more for their services. At Louetta Automotive, you’ll get the same level of service from factory-trained technicians. We also regularly offer coupons and special deals to help you save on automotive services.
First, make sure the engine is warm but turned off and the vehicle is on as level a ground as possible. Open your vehicle’s hood and look for the oil dipstick, which is usually a small, circular ring that can be yellow or orange. Pull on this handle to remove the dipstick and wipe the end on a clean towel. Push the dipstick back into the vehicle as far as it can go. Take the dipstick out and examine the tip. Small markings on the end will indicate if the oil level is where it should be. If you notice the oil is low, flecked with debris, or really dark, these are all indications it’s time for fresh, clean oil.
A full service oil change is more thorough than a typical “quick lube” service. A full service oil change includes up to 5 quarts of oil, a new oil filter, and a complete lubrication of the vehicle’s chassis, as specified by the manufacturer. The full service also includes checking all of the major components like the power steering fluid, tire pressure, air filter, belts, battery, and more.
For some diesel vehicles, the interval for changing the oil and filter may be less frequent than a gasoline vehicle but, no, the oil change itself is essentially the same.
Oil changes are one of the fastest maintenance tasks there is. An automotive technician should be able to complete an oil and filter change for most vehicles in 30 minutes or less. We strive to get our customers in and out quickly but are also extremely thorough as we service each vehicle.
